Vestibular Physiotherapy – Spinning right around with Vertigo and Dizziness

Vestibular Physiotherapy – Spinning right around with Vertigo and Dizziness

What does a vestibular physio do?

A vestibular physiotherapist specialises in assessing and treating conditions related to the vestibular system—the part of the inner ear that helps control balance and eye movements. They are skilled in conducting comprehensive assessments to determine the cause of dizziness, vertigo, and imbalance.

Common conditions a vestibular physio may treat include:

  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
  • Vestibular Neuritis / Labyrinthitis
  • Ménière’s Disease
  • Bilateral Vestibular Hypofunction, such as Age-Related Vestibular Decline
  • Vestibular Migraine

What are common symptoms of vestibular dysfunction?

  • Dizziness or Vertigo: A sensation of spinning or movement, either of yourself or your surroundings
  • Visual blurring with head movement
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Unsteadiness on your feet or feeling of disequilibrium with busy environments, loud noises or movement.
  • Falls and reduced balance

What is BPPV?

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is one of the most common causes of vertigo. It results from tiny crystals (otoconia) in the inner ear becoming dislodged and moving into the semicircular canals. This causes brief but intense dizziness or a spinning sensation when changing head positions (e.g. lying down, rolling over in bed, or bending down). BPPV is highly treatable using specific repositioning manoeuvres that guide the crystals back to their correct location.

Did you know that a significant number of falls in older adults are linked to undiagnosed vestibular dysfunction?

If you or a loved one has become more unsteady on your feet, it may be worth having your vestibular system assessed. Simone can help identify underlying causes of reduced balance and create a personalised exercise program to improve stability, confidence, and safety.

How can vestibular physiotherapy help my dizziness?

A vestibular physiotherapy session involves a thorough assessment aimed at identifying the specific cause of your dizziness. Based on your diagnosis, treatment may involve repositioning techniques or a tailored vestibular rehabilitation exercise program designed to strengthen your balance system, similar to how strength training improves muscles. Our physio Simone, will guide you through each step of your recovery journey and provide practical advice on symptom management, prevention strategies, and long-term care.

Should I wait to be seen if I’m experiencing severe vertigo?

If this is your first episode of severe vertigo or the cause is unknown, you should consult a doctor as soon as possible to rule out any serious underlying conditions. Doctors can often assist in providing you with medication to lessen the severity of the symptoms.

If your vertigo has been previously diagnosed and deemed non-urgent, book an appointment as soon as you feel well enough to attend. It is best you attend whilst you still have symptoms, so that the vestibular physiotherapist can most accurately assess the condition.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on the underlying diagnosis:

  • BPPV often resolves within two sessions
  • Vestibular neuritis may require 4–8 weeks of progressive rehab
  • Chronic or recurring conditions may benefit from periodic reviews throughout the year
